Germany’s political battle intensified on Wednesday as AfD co-leader Alice Weidel taunted Chancellor Friedrich Merz following her party’s historic victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. Weidel told Merz that “your time has run out” and accused his government of driving Germany toward “national bankruptcy,” arguing that voters had demanded a change in political direction. The AfD won 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt, more than twice the CDU’s 17.2%, putting further pressure on Merz’s government. Merz acknowledged the scale of the AfD’s result but rejected the prospect of it winning a governing majority, calling the party a “destructive force.” The confrontation comes ahead of further state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the AfD is seeking to build on its momentum. #afd #alicweidel #friedrichmerz #germany #germanelection #germanpolitics #germanynews #saxonyanhalt #bundestag #europe #europepolitics #farright #politicalcrisis #election2026 #merz #timesnowworld
