Journalist David Shipley condemns threats and abuse directed at RNLI volunteers involved in rescuing people crossing the English Channel. He acknowledges that some donors may be uncomfortable with the charity’s role in responding to migrant boats, but argues that lifeboat crews cannot selectively decide whom to save when people are in danger at sea. David says political responsibility for Channel crossings rests with the Government and organisations that he believes sustain migration “pull factors”, rather than individual volunteers carrying out rescue operations.
