Former government minister Steve Baker warns that Prime Minister Andy Burnham cannot fund Britain’s defence commitments without making difficult choices over welfare spending, taxation or borrowing. Burnham told the House of Commons that national security could not come at the expense of social security and pledged to set out a route towards spending 3.5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2035. Baker argues that taxes are already historically high and the country cannot continue borrowing indefinitely. He says Burnham is attempting to postpone politically difficult decisions because Labour MPs would resist significant welfare cuts. Have you got a story?
