Nathan Hearne, a 22-year-old man, was killed instantly when struck by a reversing garbage truck in the Mount Druitt Westfield shopping centre car park at approximately 2am. The young man, who had recently donated bone marrow to save his younger brother Stevie's life, had interacted with police at the adjacent Mount Druitt Police Station twice during the evening while intoxicated. His mother Leanne Whelan is questioning whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy, as police have declared it a critical incident triggering an investigation.
