Women in Piddington say they are organising self-defence classes as residents fight proposals to accommodate more than 1,200 male asylum seekers near their small village. Resident Victoria Hubbocks says women are discussing how to protect one another because of uncertainty surrounding the plans and the backgrounds of those who could be housed at the site. She stresses that residents’ objections concern the scale and proportionality of the proposal, rather than simply the asylum seekers’ nationalities. Fellow resident Jamie Perkin says his seven-year-old son, Rex, has written to the Prime Minister expressing fears that changes to the village could affect his family’s visits to his late sister’s grave. He says the family has received no reply. Have you got a story?
