Twenty-five years after 9/11, the generation that fought the Global War on Terror produced two decades of hard-won lessons about how America goes to war; on authorities, on targeting, on what happens when you tell commanders that the lawyers are the problem. Those lessons were never codified into the public understanding. They stayed inside the force. And now the same failure modes are back. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has learned nothing. Retired Navy Commander Bobby Jones walks through some of the lessons the GWOT generation already paid for in full and where each one is being ignored right now at the Department of Defense.
