On the 25th anniversary of September 11, Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the nearly 3,000 people killed, including 24 Canadians, and about what this country did next. Two hundred and twenty-four United States–bound planes were diverted to Canada. Seventeen airports took them in. Gander almost doubled overnight. Canadians gave stranded strangers a bed, a meal, and a call home and asked for nothing in return. Carney was visibly emotional as he told that story. He also recalled that NATO invoked Article 5 for the only time in its history, that 40,000 Canadians served in Afghanistan, and that 158 members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed. Former prime minister Jean Chrétien, speaking at 92 as a private citizen, then sent a message to American friends. Canada is generous and kind. Never mistake that generosity for weakness.
