NASA has been investigating mysterious structures forming high above Earth that can disrupt radio signals, affect communication paths, contribute to GPS uncertainty, and even create misleading radar “ghost targets.” These strange structures are known as Sporadic E layers, thin concentrations of electrically charged metallic ions inside Earth’s ionosphere. Some of the metals, including iron and magnesium, originate from meteors burning up in the atmosphere. To understand these mysterious metallic clouds, NASA launched the SpEED Demon sounding rocket directly through one of them. New multi-point measurements revealed that these layers are far more complex and turbulent than scientists previously thought. But the biggest mystery remains near Earth’s magnetic equator. The usual mechanism scientists use to explain how Sporadic E forms should not work there in the same way — yet these metallic clouds still appear. In this video, we investigate NASA’s latest findings, mysterious metallic clou
