Sarah Miles went to RADA after failing at ballet on account of having no arch and not being able to point her toes. At RADA she was the only girl with a Northern accent, which she recited very badly in front of everyone on the first day, and which she got rid of as soon as possible. In this conversation with Michael Parkinson, she talks about being declared a great new star at 17, sitting in Regent's Park waiting to be recognised by people who had no idea who she was, and about the day on the set of Blow-Up when she stopped proceedings to ask Antonioni a perfectly reasonable question about the scene. He told her it didn't matter. She packed it in and groomed horses for three years. She was very happy. She also talks about plastic surgery, which she is entirely in favour of, the school that only allowed cricket pads after she broke her friend's shin, and her one rule for nude scenes: the crew has to do it with her.
