A man who once slept on Rideau Street while struggling with addiction is now leading outreach efforts to help those experiencing homelessness in Ottawa's downtown core. CTV's Tyler Fleming reports that Gerald Jorgensen founded Steps Off the Street after a Salvation Army worker helped him reach out to his sister and enter recovery in January 2023. Volunteer Ally Cameron, who is six months sober, says her personal experience drives her to ensure people living on the streets know they have options. The nonprofit organization regularly distributes food and supplies while connecting individuals seeking recovery with detox and treatment services.
