Al-Qaeda and its affiliates have reportedly established at least eight training sites in Afghanistan during the past three years, according to a Washington Post investigation citing United Nations monitors and Western intelligence officials. The camps allegedly provide instruction in weapons, explosives and guerrilla warfare alongside newer capabilities involving encrypted communications, drones and artificial intelligence. Militant organisations are assessed to have established footholds across at least 14 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. Core al-Qaeda may number only around 100 fighters inside the country. But intelligence assessments suggest it increasingly operates as a consultancy—supplying expertise, training and operational assistance to affiliated groups.
