The latest reading on U.S. inflation is fueling speculation that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates when it meets next week. The Labor Department said Friday that consumer prices rose 3.4% in August when compared to last year. That’s the same as a month earlier. And energy prices remain elevated, with fighting in the Middle East showing no signs of easing. Diesel prices hit record highs — above $6 a gallon Friday. That has a knock-on effect, since it pushes up the costs of shipping for groceries and other goods. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage.
