Security has been stepped up around synagogues as Britain’s Jewish community marks the High Holy Days amid continuing concern over antisemitism and extremist threats. The heightened security comes as the Government faces fierce criticism over new measures targeting trade linked to Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband says the policy is designed to oppose settlement expansion and protect the prospects of a two-state solution, while critics accuse the Government of unfairly targeting Israel.
