Pla's longtime friend gave her what she thought was herbal medicine. Less than 10 minutes after taking it, she was struggling to breathe. Her hands stiffened and she blacked out. Her heart stopped. Pla survived and initally thought she had suffered an allergic reaction. Her friend, Sararat “Aem” Rangsiwuthaporn, even visited her in hospital and acted concerned. Months later, Pla heard that another woman had been poisoned with cyanide and that Aem (spelt as Am by some media outlets) had been at the scene. She looked up the symptoms and realised they matched what she had experienced: difficulty breathing and stiff hands. Then she remembered that Aem had later given her weight-loss supplements, which Pla chose not to take. “She tried to kill me twice, but I survived," she says.
