A Home Office employee has been sacked for asking the Telegraph to help find her missing son in Ukraine. Valerie Stobbart, 57, says her son was coerced into joining the Russian army last year and has been missing in action since December. Having received no help from the British government, Mrs Stobbart turned to this newspaper in May, on account of the Telegraph’s extensive Ukraine reporting and contacts. However, at a Home Office disciplinary hearing last month Mrs Stobbart was sacked from her job as an Immigration official for gross misconduct having not told her press department she had spoken to the media. Mrs Stobbart said she knew the government’s policy forbade her discussing her work with journalists, but “wasn't aware that I wasn't allowed to speak to people just to try and get some help”.
