India's UPI payment system — one of the world's most widely used real-time digital payment networks — could be entering a new phase. The Indian government has notified a framework that protects UPI payments of up to ₹2,000 from direct or indirect charges, while opening the door to potential fees on higher-value transactions. But that does not mean consumers are being charged automatically. The exact fee structure, how much could be charged and who would bear the cost are yet to be determined. The move comes as India looks at the long-term sustainability of the UPI ecosystem, which has seen extraordinary growth in recent years. In this video, we explain what UPI is, what the new ₹2,000 threshold means, how merchant discount rates could fit into the system, and why the changes matter for India's digital payments revolution — and beyond. Gursshheen Gahllen brings you the details on Firstpost Live. 00:00 — Is Free UPI Coming to an End? 00:32 — How UPI Changed Digital Payments in India 01:
