After a bullying incident in her freshman year of high school, Eva Richey realized how damaging people's misconceptions about autism could be. Eva explains how the misconception that autism functions more like a mental illness than a disorder couldn't be farther from the truth, as she highlights how she lives her life as a person on the autism spectrum. In her talk, Eva dives into what a "disorder" really is, and how autism is only a problem if society makes it one. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Eva is a junior at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School in San Francisco, where she regularly participates in Theatre productions, Chamber Choir, and the Jewish Heritage Club. Eva hopes to become an actress one day, but more than that, she wants to become a symbol for autistic success in life.
