Ellen’s talk breaks down the manipulative culture of the modern fast fashion industry and how social media has worked side by side with it to promote fast, cheap trends, taking away our individuality. She analyzes the complex system and how cheap labor, environmental factors, and scrolling culture has led us to a worldwide crisis. She reflects upon her own personal experience with thrifting, on how buying second hand clothing has not only allowed her to live a more sustainable lifestyle, but a way to find her true identity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Ellen Dale is a junior at Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco. The 2026-27 Student Body President, Ellen brought the idea of a dress code apparel thrift store to promote sustainability within her school community. She is a leader of Go Big Green, the school spirit group, and devotes countless hours to ballet outside of school. In Ellen's free tim
