Residents in the Oxfordshire village of Piddington are holding a symbolic referendum as they intensify their campaign against plans for a major asylum accommodation site nearby. The Home Office is considering using part of the former Bicester Garrison to house around 1,250 asylum seekers, compared with a village population of roughly 350. Local campaigner Ian Darby says residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the scale of the proposal, the lack of consultation and the potential impact on village life, warning that the plan would amount to “the takeover of a village”.
