Students are often measured by how well they can repeat information rather than how deeply they can understand or express it. True learning grows from stories that are real, honest stories that reveal who we are and what we’ve overcome. Storytelling doesn’t just teaching communication. It teaches humanity. And in schools today, that might be the most important lesson of all. Jay is Language and Literature teacher at Green Run Collegiate in Virginia Beach, working with a vibrant, diverse group of students—many from underserved communities. They’re performing at levels that defy expectation, not because the work is easier, but because the learning feels real. He brings innovation, storytelling, and voice into the center of his classroom. His goal has never been to just teach texts. It’s to help students find their own. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
