China on Wednesday urged the European Union to abandon what Beijing described as “discriminatory restrictive measures” in proposed cybersecurity rules targeting suppliers deemed high risk. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said previous estimates indicated the legislation could cost the EU more than €360 billion over five years and called the bloc's approach “self-defeating.” His comments followed an open letter from 17 European telecom executives warning that the proposed rules could result in up to €40 billion in equipment replacement costs and divert investment from fibre, 5G and 6G networks. The EU proposal does not explicitly name Chinese companies, but the debate comes amid growing scrutiny of Chinese telecom suppliers including Huawei and ZTE. #china, #eu, #europeanunion, #chinaeu, #chinaeutensions, #chinavsEU, #cybersecurity, #cybersecurityrules, #eurules, #technologywar, #techwar, #huawei, #zte, #5g, #6g, #telecom, #beijing, #brussels, #geopolitics, #tradetensi
