Residents of Piddington, Oxfordshire, have voted overwhelmingly in a symbolic referendum to leave the UK in protest at plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at nearby MoD Bicester. Of 312 votes cast, 285 backed independence. The government says it will not reconsider the proposal, while campaigners say the vote highlights concerns over local democracy and community consultation.
