Piddington has overwhelmingly voted to symbolically leave the United Kingdom as villagers protest plans to house more than 1,250 male asylum seekers at a nearby former military site. The Government says asylum accommodation must be distributed more fairly across the country rather than concentrated in poorer communities. Poppy Coburn argues that framing the issue as rich versus poor or rural versus urban misses the point, saying public anger is fundamentally about migration levels and whether the Government has brought illegal migration under control.
