Residents of Piddington, Oxfordshire, have voted overwhelmingly to symbolically leave the UK in protest at plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at a nearby former military site. Of 312 votes cast, 285 backed independence. The government says the asylum housing plan will continue, while campaigners say the vote is a message to ministers about local concerns.
