The Western Australian government is implementing local government reforms including mandatory four-year election cycles and encouraging council amalgamations. The state has 139 councils with 1111 elected members serving a population of over 3 million, compared to just 86 state parliament officials. Western suburbs councils like Nedlands, Mosman Park and Cottesloe are considered potential candidates for amalgamation, though forced mergers have been ruled out following the 2016 failed attempt.
