Campaigners in Warsaw on Wednesday collected signatures for a citizens' legislative initiative seeking to criminalise the public promotion of ideology associated with Stepan Bandera, the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Organisers say the proposed law would place such promotion under provisions similar to those covering Nazi, fascist and communist ideologies in Poland. The campaign comes amid longstanding disputes between Poland and Ukraine over the history of wartime violence in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. Organisers have 90 days to collect at least 100,000 valid signatures for the initiative to be submitted to parliament. The proposal reflects continuing differences between Polish and Ukrainian public narratives over Bandera and the OUN-UPA.
