China’s underground military network is coming into focus as rare footage released by Chinese state media reveals vast subterranean facilities designed to protect ballistic missiles, aircraft, ammunition, command centres and military personnel from enemy attacks. Known popularly as the “Underground Great Wall,” this network gives China’s strategic missile forces a way to conceal, move and potentially deploy mobile launchers from protected underground positions. The facilities also highlight the importance of surviving an initial strike and maintaining command-and-control capabilities during a major conflict. From hardened missile tunnels to underground aircraft shelters and ammunition storage, China’s military infrastructure reflects a broader strategy of protecting its warfighting capacity. Similar underground approaches have been used by Iran and North Korea, including reported North Korean expertise in Iran’s military tunnel network. #china #chinam military #undergroundgreatwall
