There's a planet out there that hid from us for years, and it's not pretty to look at. Bigger than Jupiter, wrapped in sickly, rust-colored clouds, streaked and mottled like a slab of meat left out too long. It was sitting in the middle of a star system we've been staring at for decades, in plain sight, and we never saw it. We looked right at it. We just couldn't see it. And the way scientists finally caught it is genuinely unsettling. They didn't find it by seeing it. They found it by smelling its breath.
