Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk defended Warsaw’s multibillion-euro effort to fortify the country’s eastern and northern borders, saying the project serves both Poland and the wider European Union. Speaking alongside Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in Warsaw on Sept. 17, Tusk said Poland’s position bordering Russia, Belarus and Ukraine created “very demanding” security obligations. Poland’s East Shield programme, launched to strengthen the borders with Russia’s Kaliningrad region and Belarus, is estimated at 10 billion zlotys ($2.64 billion), with European funding supporting defence efforts. Tusk also warned that Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure could intensify ahead of winter and said Poland was preparing for various scenarios. Poland scrambled aircraft on Sept. 17 following a Russian attack in western Ukraine near the Polish border, although no airspace violation was reported. #donaldtusk, #tusk, #poland, #eastshield, #polanddefence, #polandborder, #russia,
