French President Emmanuel Macron met Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Paris on Thursday as France sought international support for Lebanon’s underfunded armed forces and discussions began on security arrangements in southern Lebanon after the planned end of the U.N. peacekeeping mission UNIFIL. The talks are aimed at preparing an international donor conference and examining options for an international presence after UNIFIL’s mandate expires at the end of 2026. The meeting comes as implementation of a framework for an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah’s disarmament has stalled. Lebanon’s military is expected to assume a greater role in the south, but officials say it needs additional equipment and resources. Reuters reports that European and Arab military chiefs are also assessing possible alternatives to the U.N. mission amid concerns over renewed fighting. #macron, #lebanon, #jordan, #kingabdullah, #josephaoun, #unifil, #hezbollah,
