Denise is one of at least 20 women told they underwent an unnecessary mastectomy at an NHS trust in north-east England. More than 300 patients have been harmed in County Durham, while thousands more cases are expected to be reviewed, and police are investigating. The unnecessary breast removals have been described as "utterly unacceptable" by Steve Russell, County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust’s chief executive, and he has apologised "unreservedly".
