Something massive hit the Moon — and nobody actually saw the impact happen. NASA scientists discovered a massive new crater on the Moon while comparing images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The newly identified McGetchin crater measures roughly 728 feet wide and 141 feet deep, and researchers estimate an impact of this scale may occur only about once every century or longer. But the crater was only the beginning. NASA later detected an enormous thermal disturbance extending miles around the impact site, revealing that the collision changed the lunar surface far beyond the visible crater. In this video, we investigate how NASA discovered the new Moon crater, what may have struck the lunar surface, why the impact remained unnoticed for more than a year, what the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered around McGetchin crater, and why these impacts could become increasingly important as humans return to the Moon. Could another major lunar impact happen without warning? Watc
