The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland—home to an estimated 500 saltwater crocodiles—has officially been cleared to host the rowing, para-rowing, canoe sprint, and para-canoe competitions for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Following months of fierce debate and safety pushback from international rowing bodies and hundreds of athletes, an independent technical assessment confirmed that the flatwater course passes all safety, water level, and fairness criteria "with flying colours". Approved by World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide, the venue will rely on established local "croc-wise" monitoring protocols while bringing major Olympic events to regional Queensland.
