The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has suspended services in Portsmouth to review its crews’ safety after abuse from anti-migrant protesters. RNLI chiefs said they had a duty of care to their volunteers after they suffered physical and online abuse over their role in rescuing 120 migrants from a mega-dinghy that crossed the Channel from a beach near Cherbourg on Sept 6. Hundreds of protesters blocked roads in an attempt to stop the migrants being transferred to Dover for processing after the RNLI brought them ashore at a ferry port in Eastney, near Portsmouth. Volunteers were accused of acting as a “taxi service” for migrants, with some called “traitors”.
