Piddington residents have overwhelmingly voted to symbolically leave the United Kingdom in protest against plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at a nearby former military site. Campaigner Sarah White says the row exposes a wider political contradiction, arguing that some communities were comfortable with liberal migration policies until large-scale asylum accommodation reached their own doorstep. She says Piddington is unlikely to be the last community to push back as the Government moves asylum seekers out of hotels and into larger accommodation sites around the country.
