Iranians are "facing and surviving" the United States' economic pressure campaign, Reza Sayah says. "Despite the economic difficulties, I see supermarkets full, people are shopping, restaurants or cafes are full. Gas has always been available," he told Compass Points host Nick Schifrin. "I think one reason that Iranians are facing and surviving this economic pressure is the culture. ... You have community groups, religious groups supporting one another." Sayah, PBS News Hour's special correspondent in Tehran, added that it's still "difficult" for Iranians, but the country's welfare system is helping them survive. Compass Points from PBS News analyzes prominent international affairs topics and America’s role in a shifting world, breaking down global conflicts, rising tensions, and their implications for U.S. interests.
