What is prolonged grief disorder? While most people will experience a transition period after the loss of a loved one where the acute pain fades and they learn to adapt, some people stay in that period of intense grief. With prolonged grief disorder, "we're not learning to adjust to life without our deceased loved one," grief specialist Liz Gleeson said. "The volume stays up. The pain is immense. The yearning doesn't abate, and we're very much looking towards the past all the time."
