Donald Trump says the United States has secured “permanent control” over Greenland's security under a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland. For its part, Denmark says the deal preserves its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Greenlanders' right to self-determination. So, what has Washington gained? The agreement could significantly expand the US military presence in Greenland, while preventing adversaries from establishing military bases and restricting sensitive investments. The US says its access, basing and overflight rights will be permanent. But Washington already enjoyed extensive military access to Greenland under a defense agreement dating back to 1951. DW speaks to geopolitical analyst Mujtaba Rahman about what Trump has gained from the Greenland deal, what Denmark and Greenland get in return, and what the agreement means for NATO and the wider relationship between the United States and Europe. #trump #greenland #usa #nato #europe #dwnews 00:00 Trum
