A fully grown humpback whale has made a rare journey up a river and deep into California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, about 60 miles (97 km) from the Pacific Ocean, drawing attention from scientists concerned about its health and stress in the confined waterway. Researchers at The Marine Mammal Center identified the whale through a photo catalog, noting the animal has been documented 15 times over the past 24 years and was last seen in Baja California in February 2026.
