Asmaa Mahfouz was just 26 when she turned on her webcam and challenged Egyptians to stop being afraid. Her videos, posted on Facebook in the days before Egypt’s 2011 uprising, helped mobilise protesters and bring thousands into Cairo’s Tahrir Square. But the story did not end with the fall of Hosni Mubarak. From the April 6 Youth Movement and the death of Khaled Said to her arrest by Egypt’s military rulers and an indefinite travel ban, Mahfouz went from a young activist to one of the most recognisable faces of the Egyptian Revolution. This is the story of the woman who turned a webcam into a call for revolution.
