John Arlott has spent twenty years watching, talking to and writing about Fred Trueman. He estimates that roughly thirty percent of the stories about him are true. He is not sure he always prefers the true ones. In this conversation with Michael Parkinson, Arlott talks about Trueman as a three-dimensional man in a world of two-dimensional sportsmen, about the myth that has grown up around him and the stories that belong to other people but have drifted his way regardless. He shares his favourite, involving an oil prince in Aden, 196 wives and a new ball. He also talks about cricket itself, about why it has always been played for the establishment rather than by it, about the class divide between north and south that Trueman embodied and exploited, and about why giving cricket sacred overtones does it no good at all. It was invented by shepherd boys on the downs, he notes. It does not need to be treated like a religion. Legendary talk show host Sir Michael Parkinson's official YouTub
