North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast, South Korea said. Seoul, Washington and Tokyo are tracking the developments as regional tensions rise. Japan has lodged a 'stern protest' with Pyongyang, while South Korea's Presidential National Security Office held an emergency meeting and called on North Korea to 'immediately cease' its missile launches. Seoul described the firings as a 'grave act' violating UN Security Council resolutions. The launches come after Pyongyang reasserted its status as a nuclear-armed state, rejecting a United Nations resolution demanding it halt its nuclear activities.
