Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) premier Manuela Schwesig cast her ballot on Sunday in the eastern German state’s election, urging voters to participate as the contest between her party and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) takes centre stage. Schwesig said she had received support beyond the SPD’s traditional voter base during an intense campaign and said voters would now determine whether she could continue as state premier. She also said she would accept the result and seek to form a stable government based on the voters’ decision. The election is being closely watched amid the AfD’s recent gains in eastern Germany and comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s federal government faces pressure from state-level setbacks. #germany #germanyelection #mecklenburgvorpommern #manuelaschwesig #spd #afd #germanpolitics #germanypolitics #election2026 #electionday #europe #europeanpolitics #friedrichmerz #afdvsspd #worldnews #breakingnews In this Times Now World New
