New research suggests that black holes may have existed before the Big Bang — and some could theoretically still survive in our universe today. A 2026 study explores a bouncing universe scenario where the Big Bang was not necessarily the absolute beginning. Instead, the universe may have experienced an earlier contracting phase followed by a cosmic bounce into the expansion we observe today. Under this model, ancient black holes and other cosmic relics could potentially survive that transition. Some might even contribute to dark matter, help explain the surprisingly massive early black holes observed by JWST, or leave detectable fingerprints in gravitational waves and the cosmic microwave background. So what came before the Big Bang? Could there really be black holes older than our universe? And how would astronomers ever prove that one survived from an earlier cosmic era? In this video, we explore the latest science behind black holes before the Big Bang, cosmic bounce theory, primord
