During his November 2023 visit to the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China was ready to invite 50,000 young Americans to China on exchange and study programs in the next five years. From late March to early April 2026, 20 students from China and the United States boarded a research vessel in Hong Kong, sailed via Ningbo to Shanghai, and jointly participated in "A Shared Voyage: China-US Youth Friendship Program," a marine exploration and cultural exchange event. On May 23, President Xi replied to a letter from the students participating in the program, calling on more youth from both countries to take up the baton of friendship, learn from each other, progress together, and become "envoys of friendship" bridging the Pacific Ocean.
