All signs are pointing toward a record-breaking El Nino this year, which experts say raises the risk of droughts across Asia that may drive food prices higher across the globe. El Nino is part of a natural climate cycle of warming ocean temperatures, but this year's is expected to reach new extremes. It already is depleting water supplies, hurting fish catches and jeopardizing Asia’s globally important agriculture industry. Asian governments that have been drawing on their financial reserves to mitigate the ripple effects of the Iran war's impact on energy costs have less capacity to cope as El Nino raises temperatures and distorts weather patterns across a broad swath of the Asia-Pacific region.
