Something strange is happening beyond Saturn. The tiny Centaur object Chariklo has two mysterious rings, but new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) suggest those rings may be changing far faster than astronomers expected. Chariklo’s inner ring appears significantly more opaque than in earlier observations, while its outer ring produced a dramatically weaker signal. Are particles being lost or redistributed? Is Chariklo’s gravity reshaping its ring system? Or is JWST revealing something that previous observations could not see at infrared wavelengths? In this video, we explore the mystery of Chariklo’s changing rings, how astronomers discovered them using stellar occultations, what James Webb recently observed, and why scientists think this strange ring system in the outer Solar System could be evolving over timescales of years or decades. Could we actually be watching a ring system change within a human lifetime? Watch until the end as we break down the leading exp
