North Korea has announced a new weapons test, with images released by state media appearing to show a possible hypersonic missile. Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the September 20 test, which Pyongyang says demonstrates advanced defence technology and strengthens the country's war readiness. Analysts have suggested the weapon could be an upgraded system from the Hwasong-11 family, potentially equipped with a hypersonic glide capability. The launches have drawn reactions from South Korea, Japan and the United States, while coming amid renewed military activity on the Korean Peninsula and just ahead of the UN General Assembly's high-level debate. At the same time, North Korea continues to reject calls for denuclearisation, with Kim Yo Jong insisting that Pyongyang's status as a nuclear weapons state is irreversible. So, what exactly did North Korea test? How significant is its claimed hypersonic capability? And what does Kim's latest weapons push mean for the wider region? Gursshheen Gahl
