Zach Pope reviews HEART OF THE BEAST, David Ayer’s new 2026 survival movie starring Brad Pitt and his combat dog Odin. For dog lovers especially, this emotional story of survival, loyalty and persistence hits HARD. HEART OF THE BEAST follows retired Special Forces officer James Belmont and his retired combat dog, Odin, after a plane crash leaves them stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. From there, the movie becomes a brutal fight to survive — but what surprised me most wasn’t necessarily the survival story. It was the relationship between this man and his dog. HEART OF THE BEAST is familiar. We’ve seen survival movies about people battling nature before, and David Ayer isn’t trying to reinvent that formula. But sometimes simple works. Because underneath the wilderness, danger and survival set pieces is an incredibly sincere love letter to persistence, companionship and the loyal dogs that give so much more to us than we could ever deserve. That becomes even more meaningful
