One in five working-age adults in England and Wales is now receiving Universal Credit, according to new analysis of official figures. The 7.3 million claimants include 3.3 million people under 40, although Universal Credit also supports people who are already working, disabled, caring for relatives or looking for employment. Julia Hartley-Brewer says people who are capable of working should be expected to take a job rather than remain on benefits and calls for a fundamental change in Britain’s attitude towards welfare. Julia Hartley-Brewer speaks with Spiked editor Tom Slater. Have you got a story?
